Behind the Art: The Under Drawings PART I

This is an under drawing I did for the Wildstorm Productions GEN 13 Movie from back in the mid 90's as seen here, from this post.

I had the honor of working on the Raveonettes Music Video "Heart of Stone" here, I did a few production design sketches including the above one here, which won an Academy Award for Art Direction, and so I got a little recognition here.

Here is a partial under-drawing for the wide panoramic curvilinear perspective shot of Main Street here, done for Disney Interactive for the VMK[ Virtual Magic Kingdom] project from back in the 90's as well.

Inside the big clown head in the middle of the Fantasyland map here, was a circus tent like game. Here is the rough under drawing.

I actually started to flesh out that above view, and scanned it in progress as we see here in this Fantasyland design. This room eventually made it into the final single disc release.

Behind the Art
The Under Drawings
PART I

Today I have posted a series of under drawings for various projects that have been posted here on my design blog over the last few years as a PART I, in a new ongoing series I will do over the next few months.

Under drawing is the practice of doing at least two passes on any design with this first pass drawing used to fully block out a shot, to get basic proportions.

I usually put an under drawing over a hand made perspective grid I have made using ship curves, but for some the grid is on the under drawing itself as well.

The first great advantage to this method of sketching allows you to be able to make bold design choices at the sketch time, since the piece you are on is NOT the final, so you are a bit more free on this stage.

I also tend to scan and send out this stage to a client who is strapped for cash[ everyone now!], to give them a better idea of what I am planning on doing next.

The last advantage is that the under drawing takes a short time, about 1/10th the final line and shading stage, so if you want to make any changes, the time to do this is when it is blocked out in the under drawing, BEFORE the time and cash have been spent on a possible differing camera view, or design choice.

Cheers, THOM

Project Review: Virtual Magic Kingdom PART VII-Curvilinear Perspective Wrap-Frontierland

Here is a scan of the clean Curvilinear Perspective Grid I made from North , East, South, and West vanishing points for these wraps.

Here is the 38" wide Frontierland full HUB sketch I did back in the mid nineties.

Here I overlay the grid over my sketch so you can see how I followed the base grid  for my drawing.

Here is a close-up shot of the far LEFT of the sketch looking to the gate.

The middle of the  wide sketch with the various old buildings.

A close Up of the RIGHT side of the wrap with the Haunted Mansion there at the end on the hill.

Frontierland Curvilinear Perspective Sketches

Client: Disney Interactive
Art Director: Myself
Project Date: Summer 1996

This is my seventh post in my series on the Virtual Magic Kingdom [ VMK] project I did for Disney Interactive back in 1996, and with this post, I cover  third HUB perspective wrap that I , and this time I worked on a old muddy, rutted road with the town of Frontierland smack in the middle. You can view the rest of Frontierland here.

We put the Haunted Mansion on on end of the town, and the big Gate on the other that leads back to the HUB. You can also see this in my large overhead sketch here. A fun exercise to develop the overall look and be able to see it in 360 degrees as well.

I have taught fish-eye perspective using grids for years, it certainly helps you visualize a real dimensional space, as this sketch was then built out in 3D for the game in Alias Wavefront[ Pre-Maya days] by the talented 3D team.

Project Review: Virtual Magic Kingdom PART VI-Curvilinear Perspective Wraps

Here is the full 360 wrap for the Adventureland hub, near the Jungle Cruise for the Video Game we were developing back in the 90's at Disney Interactive.

I printed this out on the color xerox and made a cylinder that you could stand-up and view to get the feel for the space in 3D[ it worked great!], a 2D version of Quicktime VR from the era in sketch format!  Here is a 3D Mock-Up to Illustrate this technique

Curvilinear Perspective Wraps

 Part VI

Client: Disney Interactive
Art Director: Myself
Project Date: Summer 1996

This is my sixth post in my series on the Virtual Magic Kingdom [ VMK] project I did for Disney Interactive back in 1996, and with this post, I cover a second perspective wrap that I did for a full 360 view from one of the game "Nodes".

They wanted a single sketch that would help them visualize the view from a specific point in the hub at the Virtual Disneyland Park we were making for the Virtual Magic Kingdom game so I did a sketch for each land.

You will notice that the artwork uses the fish-eye perspective grids I based on M.C. Eschers study of this drawing method, so I developed it to the project. I even taught the team curvilinear perspective to follow the theme we had for this game. A very fun time I had there with a great team, and now that I am back doing work for WDI, I pass by the old building on a regular basis.

Project Review: Sand's Bethworks: PART II-Icon Design Iron-worker sketches.

I ended up turning the head in this early 2D sketch at us, for this sketch with the Iron-Worker lifting the beam in place.

A wide across the body hold on the I-beam for this Iron-Worked Idea.

An across the body held tight shot was my second favorite idea. Easier to make an Icon with a tighter compact design like this.

Here is the final Idea as an overlay for the Iron-Worker hammering in a spike into the flat beam which would be the logo holding device in some form like these.

A re-post image from the MMA fighter I did for, Will Ragland at Ragland Inc. The execution was to be identical in nature to what I gave Will. It was to be quad modeled and built in iron.

PART II

Clients The Sands via The Cimarron Group.
Art Director: Darren Keller and Andrew Marciniak
Project Date: Summer 2007.

This is the second post for a new Casino proposal built in an old steel mill in Bethlehem PA, and for this second posting I am putting up my little gesture sketches I did for the Iron-worker Idea they pitched.

I did a few quick Ideas with an Iron-worker and a metal I-Beam in hand being carried and finally being hammered as the final. I planned on doing a stylized model like what was executed for Fighters Only project, that I did for Ragland Inc. here, so it was to be a metal sculpt of the icon.

They wanted to pose it alot and since it is a molded model, the time factor was not conducive, so they went to just the 3D logos.

Very Fun Project all in all.

Personal Project Napkin Sketching and Doodles Part XIX[19th]

I added more stories to the quick doodle design I did here.[ I will keep adding height!]

These three little characters I designed are trouble!

A sad dark robot a bit depressed and worried.

I did this little snowman head right after the holiday season.

Personal Project
Napkin Sketching and Doodles Part XIX[19th]

In this nineteenth installment of the Napkin Sketches, Drawings, and Doodles I do when I have a pen or pencil in hand, I have put up some more.

These doodles are quick ideas as well, usually 3-5 minute sketches as a speed challenge. I also often repeat and re-do concepts to refine them a bit like seen above. It is just like I do on a paid project, only it is spread out over days rather than doing twenty or so sketches of little robots in one afternoon, I do one a night for a week, with each one taking queues' from the last.

Today I have put up a 5 story version on the mini swamp house I have done before, only this round it is even taller. I will keep going to ridiculous then stop!

I also have a bunch of characters including the "Manny, Moe, and Jack-esque' three friend grouping. Each is very different from the other, but they are a matched set.

Project Review: The Phantom 2040-PART LXXXXIV[94th]-More Female Character Designs

The character NIA[ here] from The Phantom 2040, had a few outfit changes as she had a secret identity and this was her "Lab Outfit" she hid in for the series.

Kit Walkers friend Jenna, had many an outfit change herself, even a spacesuit, and here is a prom dress for her I designed.

Here is a 3rd  design for a character for 'downtown' near Cyberville, you can view a few added designs here, and here.

Here is the last generic female character I did for the series.

More Female Character Design Drawings

Client: Hearst Animation Productions.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date Spring 1993.

This is my 94th posting for my work done on the Television 2D Animated Series, The Phantom 2040 from in the early ninety's, and today I have posted a few character designs, as well as a few fashion designs I did for the female characters for the series.

When you design an entire world of the future, you cover everything you can, from architecture, Transportation, and Product designs, Fonts, graphics, and fashion designs. Hearst gave a big allowance to buy resource materials for the fashion design work, so I got up to speed on some current trends back in the 90's from Paris, to emulate my future versions for Metropia.

I also had a few 'sexy girls' they wanted to populate here and there in the city as well, especially at the party's downtown near Cyberville in the second season, it was a bit of a 'seedy' neighborhood, so they wanted some, "ladies' walking around down there.

Personal Project: Napkin Sketching and Doodles Part XVIII-[18th]

I've been on these little cabins and swamp houses lately, so I did the super high,  tall and thin proportioned concept last night. I tilted each level of the house to the emulate the back and fourth found in the human torso body mass and hips, this gave the home some 'life'. A pain to take up the groceries huh!

As my Eastern European friend would say, a little "willage"[village]. This was to be the background behind the above sketch if I do this in 3D.

Another mini [ 1" tall] robot sketch. I try to capture a felling in each little sketch I do. The goal is to get a personality with the least amount of work first. Details can always be added to any design, but the base comp must work.

I was explaining 'gelatinous' to my 6 year old referring to the character "Bob' in Monsters vs. Aliens, so later than night, I did a gelatinous armless puppy with a ball as seen here, ...yea I know...

Personal Project
Napkin Sketching and Doodles Part XVIII[18th]

In this eighteenth installment of the Napkin Sketches, Drawings, and Doodles I do when I have a pen in hand, I have put up some more 2012 sketches that I have done this month.

These doodles are quick ideas usually 5-10 minutes from concept to final. I learned at A.C.C.D. in Viss-Com 7, my senior year to do these quick 2 minute, 3 minute and 5 minute sketch drills.

We would do these in Doug Halberts 7th term class for hours on end, and little did I know how valuable the exercise would be.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good full day detailed blue line sketch as evidenced on my blog here, but these little ones are so valuable to do FAST, it really sharpens your ability to make a fast design choice.

Keep on doodlin'!

Project Review: The Phantom 2040: PART LXXXXIII[93rd]-Character Design Overlay

A mini BIOT on treads: So I had a technique where I'd slide the original on the glass in the direction of the scan to 'scale' it down, to get the shorty look[ remember this is pre good Mac's+PC's in the bizz], and that was the underlay.

I revised the tech attached to Dr Jak from Peter Chungs concepts to fit the look of the rest of the tech, and here is the detail sketches I produced.

For the character Nia, I developed the costume all broken up and destroyed after battle with Graft[ .05mm pencil on velum.

Here is a BIOT butler overlay.[ NOTE: The BIOT underneath is a very early Pre Production Model]

Character Design Overlay Drawings

Client: Hearst Animation Productions.
Art Director: Myself.
Project Date Spring 1993.

This is my 93rd posting for my work done on the Television 2D Animated Series, The Phantom 2040 from in the early ninety's.

Today I have put up a few underlay drawing I have for various characters from the show. As the lead designer for the series I had a 1000's of items that needed to be designed for the 52 episodes that eventually aired, and the sheer volume of design was what drew me out of feature film work, to be a full time Art Director for this series, it was a great opportunity as I look back.

Personal Project: Napkin Sketching and Doodles Part XVII

I have been doing these little micro doodles since I could draw at around 4. You will find them on almost any scrap of paper available to me in the house or wherever I am, it's like breathing!

Planet of the Vampire Apes, Two of my favorite genre's...Hmmm...

A form study wit the hard-hat hair design, a fun exercise in form 3' x 5' scratchpad ...

A rocky outcropping working the form with the cracking following the contours. I was prepping the Kangaroo Jack project the day I sketched this a bit similar in thought.

In this seventeenth installment of the Napkin Sketches, Drawings, and Doodles I do when I have a pen in hand, I have put up some additional current 2012 sketches that I have done this month.

I try to keep sketching every day,... at least a bit,... it is part of my 'ritual'.
I also do a whole bunch of the mini stuff, I was a MAD magazine fan as a kid especially of Sergio Aragones little margin stuff, so I included a page on mini doodles today as well.

This is my 91st posting here on my design blog for my contributions to The Phantom 2040, and my first 2012 Phantom posting, so only a mere 28 years to go until we ARE METROPIA!

Animation Layout for television series are typically out sourced to foreign countries to complete, due to the lowered labor costs. At Hearst, we did this in Canada, France, as well as the majority is South Korea at Sei-Young Anitel  Animation Studios.

Sometimes I had enough time to correct, or flat out re-do the layouts that were botched, and our budget was the lowest in the industry so we got what we paid for, or more precisely what we DIDN'T pay for, so I did these fixed versions every chance I had.

Some I fixed were very fast, like 5 minutes to correct a perspective issue or the break out the ship curves to add the fishy eye look back into the show, but all were done to keep the continuity high.

Personal Project: Napkin Sketching PART XVI

A Fresh 2012 sketch from about 1am last night[ today!]

A little playhouse or Tiny-Home in the Coastal Redwoods, .......

A little animated character design in a Superhero Jumpsuit

Personal Project
Napkin Sketching Part XVI

In this sixteenth installment of the Napkin Sketches, Drawings, and Doodles I do when I have a pen in hand, I have put up a some 2012 sketches that I have done this month.

Itry to keep sketching every day a bit so I put up a few examples of what has been in my head.

The Frankenstein Monster above came from a discussion with my six year old about make belive and reality, so I explained to her that the Monster is from a great story, so I did a quciuk little 3" X 5" doodle on a new scratch pad I picked up last night. Pencil on Bond paper.

The other two Ball Point pen doodles, were done at my PIXAR meeting a few weeks back, when I had about 10 minutes to kill until the client came in. I had recently found the Arts and Crafts sketch I did, so it was in my brain to do a variation up on a little hill in the Coastal Redwoods of California.

I also did a little animated Superhere Character in  a jumpsuit, based on someone in the room,....shhh...:o)

Sketching really is a joy to me, and I would encourage EVERY 3D artist, and designer out there, to stay on it, it helps in ways you will only see, once you do it regularly.

A Craftsman Arts and Crafts 1920's era Cabin. River rock base and an attached greenhouse up in the Pacific Northwest.

I knew a bartender who worked at Q's in Pasadena in the 90's he eventually went to Occidental and became a Graphic Artist. We always chatted when I had a Newcastle and doodles, this is him.

An Alien in a full hooded space suit having a scotch[ Lagavulin!]

A speeding American Taxi with a Buick Tooth grilled toon car.

Napkin Sketching Part XV

In this fifteenth installment of the Napkin Sketches, Drawings, and Doodles I do when I have a pen in hand, I have put up a few additions today that I had scanned in from the mid 90's.

I found these still in my old school portfolio book I used to carry around before the advent of my blog and website. It has these napkins taped into a layout for almost a decade, so I pulled them out yesterday, scanned them for todays post.

I have a little Arts and Crafts Bungalow cabin with an attached greenhouse on the side. This little one was done near the time I was going up to Spokane for Cyan[ 1999], as I was looking at the homes around there in the Arts and Crafts style as I was considering a move up there.

I also always do these little characters and Heavy Iron cars as well on a regular basis. And even though I re draw a few cars over and over, I always get a little bit out of the exercise in perspective and basic hand control for the sketching itself, as well as each design is different is some way or another.

I always sketch and sometime soon, I hope to get digital with it with a tablet with a digitizer pen[ NOT captive] so I can sketch with varied line weight and pressure sensitive thickness and opacity variations in the lines.DELL and ASUS now offer this.
